“Patu” is a collection of cushions, plaids and shawls made of large woolen scarfs from Afghanistan and Pakistan, called Patu’s. Traditionally these shawls are worn by men, protecting them during rough weather and sandstorms. The fabric is made from strong, 100% woolen yarns and woven on automatic looms. Patu’s are available in all natural earth colors of Afghanistan: white when there is snow, sandy colors when it is dry and windy, greyish colors of the mountains and green as from the fertile areas near the rivers. The cushions are assembled at Stage053, a Dutch atelier in Enschede (NL).
These bowls are made of fossil marble, mined in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The structure and color are all natural and originateds tens of thousands of years ago. Every bowl is unique. “Oceanis” has a muddy color. The rock originates from earlier seas and contains fossils of plants, shellfish and sea creatures. The sandstone marble, so-called “Kurool” contains fossils of traces and remains of plants and animals. The bowls are carved by local craftsmen polished on lathes from a single piece of marble. At AnnaFind we love these bowls with their interesting structure. They are great for serving soups, noodles and snacks. Or as an eyecatcher on the kitchen table. Would you like to enjoy fossil marble scales for a long time? Then use a PH neutral detergent. Also, fossil marble can not withstand acidic and corrosive fluids such as lemon and alcohol.
These cords, the so-called ͞ “Watana Jakima”, are woven by hand from Alpaca wool and glass beads by the women from the mountains around Cusco, Peru. The production of textiles is very much alive in the Andes and remains for many mountain communities an extremely important source of income. The weavers pass on their skills and designs from generation to generation. Agents bring their products to the trade markets in Lima were they are sold to wholesalers and shops.
These colorful cords are traditionally used as accessories in a woman’s outfit, for example as decorative cord for hats and bags. Each cord is unique in color and design. At AnnaFind we like to use these cords as a basis for sunglasscords and adjustable wrap bracelets.
Rudraksha beads are seeds from the tree “Elaocarpus ganitrus”. They are traditionally used as mala beads in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is believed that wearing these Rudraksha’s it will increase self-consciousness. In the long term they would have a positive effect on body and mind. We decided to give this meaningful bead the main role in a small jewellery collection for AnnaFind. We combine them with (recycled) glass beads and semi precious stones. The spacer beads and charms are either goldfilled or 925 sterling silver.

These cushions are made from batiks and tie-dye fabric handmade in Tanzania. For the batik the design is created by painting or stamping hot liquid wax on a piece of fabric. The fabric is then immersed in a textile dye that adheres to all areas that are not covered by the wax. Because of the handling, fine cracks occur in the wax and the fabric gets its unique appearance. After dyeing, the wax is removed (washed out with hot water) and the first pattern is visible. By repeating the process several times multicolored designs are created.
In the tie-dye fabric the pattern is made by firmly tying parts of the fabric with yarn and / or by folding the fabric in a certain pattern. The fabric is dyed in a bath. The parts were the fabrics are tied and/or folded the dye will not or almost not penetrate. After the dyeing, the yarn is removed and the first pattern is visible. By repeating the process several times the multicolored designs are created.
Both techniques are fairly simple but very time-consuming. We develop and buy the fabrics in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, at a small cooperative founded and run by women. The cotton is also from Tanzania. The labels are made from waste leather. Stage53 in Enschede assembled the first collection of cushions.

A very delicate sort of needlework found in Turkey is needlepoint lace, called ‘oya’ or ‘igne oyasi’ in Turkish. This delicate lace is made using thread and needle. There are more types of oya. The needle made oya is a 3 dimensional needlework. The other types are crochet oya (see picture), tatting oya (a knotting technique) and hairpin oya and they are all flat.
Traditionally, the ‘oya’ is worked into tiny floral edges to decorate scarves, often of multiple colours. Every region has its own style of lace: small and delicate, large and brightly coloured, with or without beads. In different regions of Turkey there are initiatives where they make beautiful jewellery with the local variant of ‘oya’.
Usually several women work on a collective basis. The crocheted bracelets you find at AnnaFind are collectively made for the Dutch brand Ottomania by a number of women in central Turkey. This keeps the regions distinctive, beautiful traditional handicrafts alive and gives the artisan makers an income.
The bracelets are made of nylon thread with glass beads, so they can just get wet or being washed (in a washing bag). With a cotton cloth in between, the bracelets can also be ironed. A nice gift!
